Lawn Mowing and Care in Dubai: How Often Should You Mow?

Lawn Mowing and Grass Cutting Services Dubai

How often should you mow your lawn in Dubai? The short answer is: more often than in cooler climates, and on a schedule that changes with the season. Dubai’s heat, strong sun and long growing season mean grass grows fast from October to April and slows down in the peak summer months. Mowing at the right frequency keeps the lawn dense, green and able to cope with heat, while mowing too rarely or too short weakens it and lets weeds take over. This guide explains lawn mowing in Dubai, including how often to mow, how to water and feed, and the mistakes to avoid.

How often should you mow in Dubai?

In the cooler growing season, from about October to April, most Dubai lawns need mowing once a week, and sometimes every five days if growth is fast after rain or feeding. From May to September, growth slows in the extreme heat, so mowing every 10 to 14 days is often enough. Always mow when the grass is dry, and never cut off more than one-third of the grass height in a single mow. If the lawn has grown long while you were away, cut it in two passes over a few days, lowering the blade gradually, rather than scalping it in one go. A regular rhythm matters more than the exact day: a lawn mowed a little and often stays denser than one cut very short once a month.

How high should you cut the grass?

Keep the grass a little longer in Dubai than you might expect. A cutting height of about 4 to 5 centimetres in summer helps shade the soil, hold moisture and protect roots from the sun. In the cooler months you can cut slightly shorter, but avoid scalping the lawn close to the ground. Longer grass also crowds out weeds and recovers better from foot traffic. Adjust the mower height between seasons rather than leaving it on one setting all year, and keep the blade sharp: a blunt blade tears the grass, leaving brown tips that dry out quickly.

Watering your lawn in Dubai

Watering and mowing work together. In summer, water early in the morning, before the heat of the day, so the soil is moist before you mow and the grass can recover. Water deeply two or three times a week rather than a light sprinkle every day, and check that sprinklers cover the whole lawn evenly — dry patches are often a sign of a blocked or misaligned sprinkler head. Avoid mowing wet grass, which clumps under the mower and spreads disease, and avoid watering in the middle of the day, when most of it evaporates. After mowing, leave light clippings on the lawn if they are short; they break down and return nutrients to the soil.

Feeding and looking after the soil

Feed the lawn in the cooler months, when it is growing strongly and can use the nutrients. Use a balanced lawn fertiliser at the rate on the label, water it in well, and avoid feeding a dry or heat-stressed lawn in peak summer. Aerate compacted areas once or twice a year so water and air can reach the roots, and top-dress thin areas with a light layer of sandy loam or compost. Keep an eye on the edges: a clean edge makes a lawn look cared for and stops garden beds from creeping over the grass. Rake up leaves and heavy clippings, which can smother the grass and encourage fungal problems in humid weather.

Common lawn mowing mistakes in Dubai

The most common mistakes are cutting the grass too short, mowing with a blunt blade, and mowing on the same schedule all year. Others include watering in the heat of the day, feeding in peak summer, and ignoring brown patches until they spread. Brown patches can have several causes — dry spots, grubs, compacted soil or a faulty sprinkler — so check the soil and the irrigation before reaching for a treatment. Little and often is the rule for both mowing and watering, and a lawn that is fed, aerated and mowed regularly is far less work than one that is left and then rescued.

When to get professional lawn care

If the lawn is large, is thinning or patchy, or you travel often, a regular professional mowing and care visit takes the guesswork out of the schedule. A professional team can mow, edge, feed and check irrigation in one visit, and can spot grub damage, dry spots and disease early. That is especially useful in summer, when a lawn can go from green to stressed in a few days without water.
